I am inspired by people who are willing to confront the shadows of themselves and find light.
-Brittany Burgunder
I’ve always found shadow work so interesting. Not easy, but helpful and fascinating in so many ways. Have you done any of your own shadow work? To me, it’s the work surrounding looking at all parts of ourselves, especially the work that we’re most resistant to, the work that often brings with it the most healing and the most change. But first we often need to learn to stay in the discomfort of the parts of us that aren’t in line with the greater narratives we tell ourselves. Maybe thoughts like we’re all generally good inside, but what about those times that we aren’t good, misbehave, don’t follow societal norms, etc.?
If this topic interests you (and I hope that it does!), read on for some short, quick information on: the difficult parts of shadow work, the helpful parts of shadow work, and shadow work self-care ideas.
Some of the difficult parts of shadow work may include:
- Trouble looking at the bad/ugly parts of ourselves

- It can feel exhausting and draining at times too
- You may feel very alone
- You may not want all parts of yourself to be seen by you and others
- Sharing your inner work with the wrong people can leave you feeling misunderstood, shame, emotionally disconnected from others, etc.

If you’re currently struggling with some hard things about yourself, sometimes called the shadow side, know that you’re not alone. This work is hard, and deep, and often very rewarding on the other side of all the hurt and pain. Please reach out to your doctor or a therapist in your area if you could use more help and support through this process right now. I’m sending lots of love and compassion your way throughout this journey in your own life!
