The time to relax is when you don’t have time for it.
– Sydney Harris
Rest and relaxation have been on my mind a lot this week. After a whirlwind move from our short-term apartment back in to our house (after living overseas for just under two years), we all proceeded to get sick. UGH! It makes sense as to why, with all the heightened stressors, and at the same time oh so frustrating with all the things that need to still be done, and no energy to do any of them. I was in a place of letting go of my wants and expectations this week, so I could focus fully on my need to rest my body and let it heal. And it did work in my case, as I’m feel so much better today!
Can you relate to any of this in your own life?
Here’s what’s to come in this blog, in my signature, short and quick bullet points: why it’s so hard for women to relax, basic self-care needs, and wrapping up with physical self-care ideas. Enjoy!
Why is it so hard for women to relax?
- You feel like your duties are never done
- Not trusting others to help
- Wanting all tasks completed first
- Everyone else’s needs come before your own
- Feeling like you’re always failing somewhere
- Wanting things done perfectly
- Thinking that relaxing isn’t productive
- There’s too much to do
- Your discomfort with asking for help
- Fear that if you don’t complete tasks, no one will
What else would you add here?
Basic self-care needs:
- Staying hydrated
- Getting enough sleep
- Eating a healthy diet/eating regularly
- Moving your body
- Social support
What else would you add to this list?
Physical self-care ideas:
- Make plans with loved ones
- Start a hobby
- Take a deep breath
- Give or receive a hug
- Schedule some alone time
- Schedule in transitions
- Take breaks
- Do something relaxing
- Do a body scan
- Tighten and relax your muscles
- Snuggle under a blanket
- Enjoy your morning coffee
- Spend time with your pet
- Schedule a physical check up with your doctor
What other physical self-care ideas help you when you’re not feeling your best?
